Questions You Should Ask Your Newborn Photographer

I’ve been a newborn photographer for a long time and one of the most common issues I see when it comes to newborn photography shoots is that a lot of parents really aren’t sure what to expect from a shoot and aren’t really sure what to ask their photographer in advance.

So in this blog post, I want to take a look at the 4 top questions you should ask your newborn photographer

Of course, that doesn’t mean that there are only 4 questions you can ask, there may be some questions you have that don’t make this list. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask them, this article simply covers some of the most common questions parents should ask before their newborn photoshoot.

So, with all that being said let’s dive into the 4 questions you should ask your newborn photographer.

Key Questions To Ask Your Newborn Photographer

Question 1: What if My Baby Won’t Sleep

This is probably the biggest and most common worry parents have about a newborn shoot and as a mum of 2, I totally understand why.

Let’s be honest, newborn babies will poop, sleep, cry, and eat when it suits them and not always when we want them to.

The great news is that most newborn photographers are used to this and will have a few tricks up their sleeves to help get your baby to sleep.

Now, I’m not saying it’s going to be easy but don’t worry if your baby doesn’t want to sleep, your photographer will still be able to get some beautiful shots.

I know that when someone books a newborn photo session with me I am always prepared for the baby to be a little unsettled at points and I always plan my newborn sessions with this in mind.

In fact, if you have your newborn session with Little Beanies, I don’t even need the baby to be asleep for the session as my shoots are natural shoots usually carried out at your own home, meaning there is no pressure to make sure the baby is asleep or settled!

Questions You Should Ask Your Newborn Photographer

Question 2: What Should We Wear

This is a great question to ask as what you wear can really impact the overall look of the shoot.

It all depends on the look you are going for with your session, for example, I specialise in relaxed, natural light newborn photography so I always suggest outfits that work with that, other things to consider are where the session is being held.

While I don’t offer in-studio sessions, some photographers will. I prefer sessions at home or sometimes even outdoors. This will play a part in what to wear.

If you want a more natural and earthy feel to your images, I recommend opting for neutral colours such as cream, white, beige, and light brown.

If you want a more formal feel or if you are going to use the images for a specific occasion such as a christening then you may want to go for something a little smarter.

Of course, it’s not just about what you wear, your photographer will also need to take into account things like what colour backdrop they are using and how that will impact your outfits.

This is something you can discuss with your photographer in advance to come up with the perfect plan for your shoot.

Choosing the right outfits for the session will be really important when it comes to making sure you love the finished images.

Question 3 – How Should I Prepare My Home For The Session

This is a great question to ask as preparing your home for the session is really important.

The first thing you need to do is think about the look you want to go for with the shoot, this will help you to decide what kind of setting you want to create.

If you want a more natural and relaxed feel to the images then you will want to make sure your home is tidy but not too tidy, you don’t want it to look like you just cleaned up for the photographer.

I would recommend decluttering any surfaces such as tables and shelves, this will help to create a more relaxing feel.

If you have any personal items such as photo frames or books that you want to include in the shoot then make sure they are out and easily accessible.

The last thing you want is to be running around looking for things when the photographer is trying to take your photos.

This is why if you are unsure about anything then you should ask your photographer if there is a certain way they want you to get your house ready before they arrive, or if there is certain things they would like you to have to hand.

Most photographers will be happy to give you some guidance on this.

Question 4: Can Siblings and other family members be in the photos

This is a great question to ask as it’s really important to know if siblings and other family members can be in the photos.

The answer will depend on the photographer, some photographers may only want to photograph the baby, while others may be happy to include siblings and other family members.

I am always happy to have other family members involved in the sessions if it’s something the parents want.

If you want siblings and other family members to be involved in the shoot then it’s important to make sure they are prepared for it.

I would recommend talking to them in advance about what will happen during the session and what they need to do.

It’s also important to make sure they understand that they need to be on their best behavior and that they need to listen to the photographer.

However, this is where a relaxed session is normally best so that parents don’t feel too much stress when it comes to having older siblings take part.

A fun relaxed session where everyone involved is having fun and not feeling stressed will always bring about the best results.

So those are my 4 top questions that you should ask your photographer before your newborn photography session.

Other key questions could be, what age is this most suited to? How can I pay? How long does it take to get the final images? What is your preferred style of newborn photography? What happens if my baby gets sick on the day?

I hope you have found these questions helpful, if you would like more information about booking your own newborn session with me then please just get in touch.
